Today: Chinese for Lunch

Posted by marc on February 3rd, 2010

China

Today i felt like having some Chinese food for lunch – this is easy as the border is only 50km from here. Went with my Chinese Honda copy to the border town – Boten – and – had a Dali Beer!! (great) and fried vegetables with rice. All for 1.70 € – i can not complain as it even was good!!!
BTW i do Couchsurf in Luang Nam Tha.

Last Evening in Shanghai

Posted by marc on August 13th, 2009

Did spend the day with last minute shopping and getting lost in the small old hutongs. Sometimes it is like in a little village far far from here and than it is back to modern Shanghai again.
Ludger came back from Germany today and we will have dinner together before i have to go to the airport.
4 weeks?? why did it go so fast???
Cheer to all the nice people that did make this trip special! I shall come again!

A few Night Pix from Lijiang

Posted by marc on August 12th, 2009

Did stay the last 2 days at Piers place in Kunming. Very relaxed as he has a housekeeper that takes care of things. She walks the 2 dogs and cooks food all the time. So one can not get hungry!
Now i am back in Shanghai at Petra’s amd Ludger’s place. The skyscrapers sparkle and the river is full of boats. And i got me a good assortment of different beer in the freezer. Things are good!!

Here are a few night pictures that i took in Lijiang – ended in the “everything is 10 Y place” – that is 1€ – so i had some Canadian Club and the barkeeper purred me free Dali the whole night – what a nice place!!!

Dali
Now would you believe it??? Went out with Monika and Alex – the guys i did meet last winter in Pai at Chris’s place. At my place did stay a Scott that know how to play the guitar. So one evening we had dinner at Chris’s and i took Scott, and the same evening Monika and Alex where there as well. Now – a few months later in Dali – after our dinner we went to a little bar not really in the center. And who sits there and plays the guitar??? What a small world after all!!

Dali
Every day the trash truck drives down the streets and stops every few meters. They play some music like “Happy Birthday” (why?? could play anything else….) and everybody comes with the trash!

Now it is 9.13 – outside i can hear somebody with a wood saw, chicken, sometimes a car honking, and the monks pray. Sky is still gray. Have more than 3 hours before the bus leaves for Lijiang. Found a host over there that has a nice old house – similar to the one from Monika and Alex in Deli.
Time for a shower and breakfast!

Terry!
consider this next spring when it get’s to hot in Pai! Cross to Laos – head up north which is still more or less untouched by mass tourism. There you cross into China and you are very very close to where i roamed the last few days!!! Also it is much nicer to travel as it is rainy season right now over here.

Back in Shangri-La

Posted by marc on August 4th, 2009

After visiting the Meili Snow Mountain (which is sacred to most Chinese Buddhist people) i am back in Shangri-La. The stupid mountain lodge was closed due to road construction – so my cab driver drove me to the next village. Did meet 2 girls on the street and we ended up sharing a room and as they had organized a taxi to the mountain i was happy to join. Next morning it was kind of cloudy but the sky cleared the closer we came. Than it was a 3 hour hike up to a platform where the people pray and leave the flags – or take pictures – or both. The taxi took us back to Deqin in the evening where we shared another hotel room. Today i had a big bus back to here – landscape is like Peru in the mountains. Quite a nice drive.

As for Terry and his friends – sorry no map over here to show you where but it is all more or less in Yunnan and Sichuan – you have to google it :-(

I am in Shangri-La

the plan was to go all the way up north to Deqin but the last bus leaves from here at 12 so they do not have to drive in the dark mountains. Well one night over here can not be to bad!
