Cows and a few Pictures of Amsterdam

2016-08-04 at 15:12

Today Gerben took us to see some of the reclaimed land. The Dutch water management is like no other on the planet. There are pumps everywhere and water as well. Often you have on one site of the street water a metre below and on the other only a few centimetres from street level. Half of the Netherlands is reclaimed land that is only about one meter above sea level and is protected by dikes.
We did stop and had a snack next to these cows. And when one comes over the rest will usually follow since we where a nice distraction from the boring day in the field.

Daytrip to the Cuc Phuong National Park

2016-05-11 at 19:53

Another gray morning at the Chez Beo Homestay. But it looked like it will stay dray today. Decided to go for a ride to the Cuc Phuong National Park to look for the 1000 year old tree.
I gave the girl from Google Maps all the freedom and she did choose a really nice road all the way!
If only the sky…

First stop on the way: Hang Mua Temple – or lets say down at the temple. To get there you pass some ducks!

Hang Mua Temple in the mist

Ok let’s get back to the road. The Google woman is complaining as well…

Ducks - again
Ducks – again!
Finally I did reach the park, did pay entrance and continued to the parking lot further inside. After pay for bike parking (why is that not covered in the entrance fee??) I did start the hike to the tree. If you ever been in a forest in Asia this is nothing special. It was quite warm and humid so after 30 minutes you are wet – a lot! And finally you reach the tree.

Finally - the 1000 year old tree
The sign is prove: I present you the 1000 year old tree

Not a lot left but it is an old tree
Not a lot left but it is an old tree – and nothing more. Since I did see really old trees in California I was not to impressed by this one and continued the walk back to the parking lot. They made it into a wide circle so you see new green stuff and not the same that you saw on the way to the tree.
Back at the bike my shirt was so wet I had to put it under the seat in the “trunk”. Told the Google woman that we go back to Chez Beo. She was super happy to guide me again and off we went.

Following Google Maps
Following Google Maps does lead you to all sorts of roads in Vietnam. Sometimes I was not sure about the girl. She thinks I have a car – that is why she want me to go on the highway when she finds one but you are not allowed with a bike. And sometimes she thinks I have a 4 x 4 or a dirt bike when she sends me to roads like this one. Girl – you have to learn a few things! But I have to say – most of the times she does a god job.

From Khe Sanh to Đồng Hới

2016-04-16 at 09:56

After a not so good night in Khe Sanh but a better breakfast: the good old pack the bag game. If you do it every day you get used to it and it goes quite fast. All the stuff you do not need is at the bottom and it stays there. Everything you need will be in the bag in a few minutes.
Today’s mission is to cover 240 kilometres on the Ho Chi Minh Road and there will be no gas station on the way. So I did fill a 1,5 litre plastic water bottle for a few extra kilometres.
Quick look at the forecast an it was promising down at the beach. Another break on the way – why not. So Đồng Hới it was. The clock: 61065 km, the sky: the usual Gray and the road: dry and dusty. Lets drive!

Take a left at the monument
Take a left at the monument. There is actually one more gas station about 10 kilometres after the monument. But it does not make sense to stop and fill up again.

MacArthur Foundation
Would have been interesting to know what the MacArthur Foundation sponsored over here. Since they are from the US one would think they would write something in English as well. No no no – not here in Vietnam they do not!

Driving was quite relaxing. No traffic, no sign of civilisation - not even power poles! Very rare in Vietnam where usually you find them at last at one site of the road.

My bunk bed at the Ocean View Homestay in Dong Hoi. Since last night was way to expensive I have to make the money back. The next two nights I pay 5 US $ each with WiFi, fan, AC and shared bathroom with hot shower.
Upstairs they have the private rooms but this one will do for me for the next two days.
