The little Tempel next to Chez Beo Homestay in Ninh Binh

2016-03-16 at 11:34

Next to Chez Beo Homestay is a small temple. It has its own entrance on the side of the big pond next to the restaurant. They had a little temple celebration while I did stay at Chez Beo close to Ninh Binh. More information about the Chez Beo Homestay in this post!
They did burn a lot of paper offerings, the little band did play most of the day and they did sing and pray.
Here are a few pictures from the day.

Prayers
They do pray most of the time. The priest does change his coat many times and gets up and down and talks, sings and is praying as well.

The musicians
Did try to get him when he was playing his instrument. But every time he saluted and stopped to play so after 3 attempts I gave up and took this one.

From Hanoi to Pom Coong Village

2016-03-08 at 16:35

Good morning Vietnam! Did check out of the North No 2 Hotel and walked to the motorbike place. On the way I had the usual breakfast: Coffee and a Baguette with juice.

The new Motorbike

Then: surprise surprise – my bike was gone. Did not really understand why but there was a Nouvo 3 that looked a lot better than the one from last evening. And the breaks where better too. So far so good. Next question: “Do you only ride in the city?” I told him yesterday and why would I need a rack and stuff if I only ride in the city? Now they wanted 500.000 more so the total was 2.000.000 Dong for 45 days. Still less than 2 US $ a day but a bit more from what it was last evening. What to do? Waste another day to look at backpacker bikes? Or take that one that looks and drives ok? Fuck it – I take it!

My ride on the street
My ride on the street – did get one of the big bags (80.000 Dong) to keep dirt and dust from my bag. It does function as a security feature as well. Bright orange you can see – at last that was my idea.

Home-stay in Pom Coong Village

The Home-stay Nr. 24
The Home-stay Nr. 24 in Pom Coong Village. The village is close to Mai Chau and about 140 km from Hanoi. The population is mostly White and Black Thai as well as 5 more Ethnic Minority groups. They main income is rice and tourism. The tourism part grows fast – about 99,5% of them where Vietnamese when I was there.
Did walk a bit in Pom Coong and found Home-stay Number 24. Somehow almost all of them are called after the house number.
The next day I found out that Number 15 – the one I wanted to go is inside a cluster with other places and it is a full-blown souvenir sales operation down in the village. Up where my home-stay is it was quite in the day and not many tourist did walk there. Good for me.

The first night there where 3 other guys at the place. The room is the whole first floor. You get a mattress on the floor, pillow, blanket, towel and a mosquito net. Which I did not use. There is enough space between the beds. The second night I was alone and the last night there where a guy from Ha Noi across the room. One night with Dinner and Breakfast is 200.000 Dong, Lunch is 70.000 and one big Beer Ha Noi is 25.000. That is less than 10€ for a night with 3 times food. Quite a good deal and the shower was hot as well. Free WiFi from the Sun Set Bar next door! Great!

Back in Vientiane

2015-04-07 at 16:40

Since I wanted to meet friends in Vientiane Friday night i had to get down there. Took the VIP bus for 50.000 with a pick up in town. That worked quite good and the best thing was that the bus did stop opposite the Mixay Hotel. That was the hotel where I wanted to stay anyhow. Great!
They even had a free room. And a basic breakfast as well. Did come to 60.000 kip for a fan room with a single bed, table, chair, mirror and a cabinet. Fair enough.

Welcome to Vientiane
Did try to find a decent place for a sandwich or some local food. Turned out not to be too easy. But I did find that little one.

No talk to shoe!
I guess they wanted to say “Do not take your shoes into the toilet” but that sign is rather confusing!

Cool Garage
Phonekham and his brother did drive me to the temple and we had a soup before we went there – cool garage at the other side of the road.

My friend Moritz died 2 years ago in Pai. Some of you might still remember. Somehow his ashes ended up in a temple in Vientiane.
Well the Thai police did send the body down South and Phonekham went over to Thailand to organize the cremation in a temple over there. Than he got a box with the ashes in a plastic bag. He went back to Vientiane than and stored it in a temple. That is why I am here now – taking care of the last step. But before that I have to get the ashes first.

Ready for cremation
Coincidence – there where preparing another cremation a bit later in the day.

The box
Look look the box. Interesting – they did put him into a Hong Tong box. A Thai whiskey brand. If you ever collect me can you make it at last a premium whiskey?

The box
Not a lot inside – that is all there is left. And some Thai paperwork which I can not really read. Thank you Phonekham for taking care the last 2 years!!

Back to more happy happy again. Nong from Thailand came over for a night to visit. She was lucky since her friend Noy did pick her up from the bus station. The 2nd hotel she was asking had a room for her and then we went for some food.

Nice dinner view
The view from our table – very nice!

On to the next bar and then another one to meet with Phonekham, his brother and another dude.

Lao Soup
Lao soup the next day. Soooo god. If you find a local place – make sure to get one. They only sell soup so you can not get confused. 10.000 to 15.000 kip.

Phonekham & Me
My last evening – my last beer with Phonekham

Thursday night Phonekham dragged his brother and me in the club – this video gives you an idea about the show over there.
