Over the Kunzum Pass into Spiti Valley
Everybody that drive over the Kunzum Pass will stop here. The locals to pray and we to take some pictures and a piss. This is where you get the 1st taste of thin mountain air above 4500m. From here on it goes into the Spit Valley. The valley is surrounded by huge peaks and whit an average altitude of 4500m one of the highest and most remote inhabited place on earth.
Rudyard Kipling describes Spiti in Kim: At last they entered a world within a world – a
valley of leagues where the high hills were fashioned of the mere rubble and refuse from
off the knees of the mountains … Surely the gods live here. Beaten down by the silence
and the appalling sweep of dispersal of the cloud-shadows after rain. This is no place for
men.
India is still moving towards china by the speed of 5mm per year. So the mountains still grow!
Finally we did reach Kaza – only a bit more than 16 hours for 240 km.

Kunzum La is a special spot. If the weather is good, there is a small trail from the pass to a Lake on 4300 m, the lake is called Chandertaal Lake … a spooky place …

great idea – i thought of going in the alps at the beginning of september again , but yes, why not? will martin be there too? i’m not sure about the wheater in october in the alps….any plans where exactly to go???

wir sind hier zwischen -20m bis 2000m über 0mm somit bist du gerade deutlich höher als wir hier in bribir, croatia ! =)
dafür haben wir gerade ca. 30°C und leichten südwind – wunderbar!!

Hi! I chanced upon your blog and thought I’ll drop a note. When were you in Spiti? I’ve been here for 2 months (only foreigner here now) and just want to fully immerse in the local culture. This is a great place and im staying with a family that speaks only a little English. Culturally so different from what I imagined them to be. Also, I’ve established a site to help my host mother sell her hand knitted socks. If you remember almost every woman here knits! She needs the money for her son’s college, most locals here only hold government positions and work is so laid-back – only 5 hrs a day but pay is only 5-6000INR which is barely enough. It’s really one of the most beautiful place on earth but sadly there are such poor facilities that require hard work – like lack of water in winter time, no toilet/ shower and proper heating equipments. Anyway great to know that Kim wrote about Spiti! Cheers!

i was there this August when the shit went over the fan. Rain and landslides. So it was not a good year – but still better than in Leh…
Who knows – i might be back in summer again. How long will you stay???
