Last Day Trekking near Salang and than back to New Delhi

December 18, 2014 at 16:26

OK – today I really wanted to sleep a bit longer since this would be a day with less walking. So I told the guys not to come in my room and wake me before 8 in the morning. Who had to get something really not important at 6.30? You guess! That was my night and since I was up we had breakfast and started to walk. All the steep way that we went down yesterday – we had to go up today again. And soon enough thick fog and rain again. Why would it be better than the last two days?

A bit like Jurassic Park out here…

It does not matter where we passed – we were invited for tea and even food. Nice to dry a bit on the fire as well.

Than it took the whole day to get back to Rishikesh. I stayed across the street from the bus stand. There was a really good and cheap restaurant on the street just in front of the hotel. I had a great dinner and then my last night in sweaty India for that trip.

I went a day to early to New Delhi to meet with Sandra again. Since she did not stay at the hotel where she told me i could not find her. But of course late in the afternoon she did spot me. So we had dinner together and it was a nice end of that trip. I had an air con room since it was round 38 in the day and it did rain from time to time. Way to humid to do anything apart from last-minute shopping and nothing at all in the room.

Air India
Great – I had all three seats for myself for the whole flight! That was it. Two months of summer holiday. See you again India!

Back in Rishikesh

December 16, 2014 at 02:26

Last time I was in Rishikesh I said that was the last time. And now I am back again. Never say never I guess. Sandra wanted to work on her Joga and Anils village is on the way. So here we go – back in Rishikesh again. It did not change to much but it changed a lot. The restaurants we went last time where full of Indians now so the whole vibe was different. Food was still good but way more taxi cars than last time. I would say I will not go there again but Jathin has the idea to go there for a while so if I want to visit him and Anil – it is Rishikesh again…

Lots of devotes move from one temple to the other. And a lot more than last time use the taxi.

It is said that Lakshmana crossed Ganges on jute ropes between the place where this bridge was built. There is always something going on at the Lakshman Jhula bridge. Monkeys, cows, bike, motorbikes, carts and loads of pedestrians

View from the “German Bakery” over the Lakshman Jhula bridge towards Lakshman Mandir. I like to have a few Lemon Soda and some coffee there in the morning and watch the traffic on the bridge.

Some of the millions of taxis they have now

After a few days it was time to move on and visit the professional up in the mountains towards Uttarkashi. He would pick me up there and we would travel to his village further in the mountains.
So I left the hotel early in the morning. Of course it had to start to rain which makes the whole thing terrible. You have to carry the bags all the way up towards the street. Down at the other side the taxi mafia wants more than a bus to New Delhi would cost only to bring you to the bus stand. So you have to walk all the way up to the street where you will have the next price fight with the next taxi guy. The taxis here are shared but since you are a tourist you will have to pay the whole taxi. And since I wanted to get to Uttarkashi at the same day I have to get to the bus stand. In the end the taxi driver was happy and I was at the bus stand and had a good seat in the bus. The drive takes forever and a day. So I had to take a room for the night. It is easy to find a hotel. I could only see two to I took the one next to the bus stand. A message to Anil that I was there and off for dinner I was. Than a few hours of sleep till the next morning.

Greeeeeen – how nice! On the way from Rishikesh to Uttarkashi. There was a really big lake somewhere in between. The Their Dam Reservoir – looked good enough to spend a few days somewhere there if one has the time.

From Shimla with the Train to Kalpa and on towards Rishikesh

On the way to the train station this friendly gentleman wanted to hug me – great. Thank you and get off my foot now!

Kalka - Shimla Railway
No clue but Sandra wanted to take the railway. I hate them slow trains in India. This one took over 6 (!!!) hours downhill for only 93 km! Wow – I could do that on my slowest bike faster. And since that is a toy train there was no space as well. And you have to wait in every other station for the trains that come up the hill. So if anything goes wrong with the train that is going up – your trip just got longer. At last plenty of food at some stations. We where not lucky with the weather. It was cloudy and foggy all the way so we could not really see if there is anything nice to see. Makes the whole ride even more frustrating.

I wonder what they do if the fire breaks out away from a station??

Kalka - Shimla Railway
There you go – train had to stop since the cow was in between the wall and the train. After a while the beast moved on and we could move as well.

Everybody happy??

Kalka - Shimla Railway
Even Sandra went nuts!

Surprise – we made it to Kalpa! But than there was no way of getting anywhere from here. No more bus connection as it was too late and no train. On the map it does look like only a few hours drive in the morning so we got a hotel for the night.

Kalka
I did rip my shirt so this friendly man did a fantastic job in no time. That is so nice. You see a tailor shop – go in and ask and off with the shirt and they go to work. Best of all – it was free!

Kalka
Does not look very good but man – it was! And the fresh bread was one of the best i had on that trip! 50 Rp – something like 0.74 €

Chandigar
So the next morning we where off to the bus station after a good breakfast. Than we took the bus to Chandigarh. Of course they have a few different bus stations and we had to take a taxi to the other side of town. Than we waited and waited for the bus to Rishikesh – that took forever. But we made it before dawn and got a good hotel room.
