Yes – get up in the middle of the night girls and make some noise. We managed to be almost the first at the breakfast table. I will never understand!
Since I offered to take food, wine and beer up the mountain they gave me most of it. Together with the camera gear it was over 20 kg. If I would not have been to the Himalayas a few days ago – never would I be able to walk with all that stuff up the mountains. Since we fixed some of the food, the wine and some beer yesterday I had to carry some other stuff from the guys. Looks like I am a porter now!
It was not raining so we decided. Steiner decided to move further up the mountain. Now you also know why the House is called Rappensee Hütte – because it is next to Rappen Lake.
And than the sun did try to break the clouds.
Still happy girls
Looks like the sun lost that battle.
At the wrong place at the wrong time. Even it was a winter with not a lot of snow the 4 guys managed to be here just in time when an avalanche took them.
The start of the Heilbronner Weg. Sure-footedness, alpine experience and vertigo freedom beyond that sign! And I might add – it is much better when it does not rain, when there is no strong wind and on top of that – when you have a view!!
The easy part – up hill
Take a look at some pictures from the last trip. So you will see what we did not!
There are some parts of the way when you are happy to have the steel rope. Even more when it is wet and slippery. But than there are some parts where they did not put one – and they do look way more dangerous than some where not even your grandmother would need the rope.
Yeti does stay here in the summer!
When we reached the hotel we had about 20 minutes of sunshine. So we did have a nice cold beer in the sun and where looking forward to a great sunny afternoon. Than we put the bags in the room and had one more beer at our converted balcony when the rain came down like nothing else. It was poring for most of the evening and night.
The next day we went to this place for a last beer before the Autobahn
I was fresh out of jet lag from the trip to India when we went to the Alps a week after my plane got back from New Delhi.
Steiner did pick me up and I spend the night at their place. It was Anjas birthday so we had Esslinger Champagne, Pizza and beer. And of course we had to start driving at 6 in the morning. That means Anja got up at 4.30! Why? So that was a really short night and guess what – i was in for some more of that treat. Since the guys think one has to get up before 6 when he is in the mountains. I did talk about that in one of my last posts…
So we went on the Autobahn and drove down to Bavaria. A few kilometer behind Obersdorf we parked the car and started the trek.
Today they did bring the cows from the higher grazing grounds down to the farms. This is organized so that all the farmers bring them down the same day. The cows get decorated nice and a lot of people come to watch. We found a small group that was waiting for the others that are on the way.
This guys are very young. They stay down here most of the time – so no fancy dress today. These youngsters are very nosy and do come close to the fence since this is the only entertainment they have.
In the mountains in India nobody would even think of putting a big bridge over such a small stream. And if so it would be a log and that is it.
I have to say that is quite nice. Since the little place at the first rest stop is closed for winter the owner does put refreshments in the fountain. So he earns some €€€ and we got a cold brew. Great to start a trip up the mountains.
So far a perfect start
A patch of old snow – and someone put even a chair to make it easy for us. Still Anja managed to slip on it – to bad i had the camera not ready for that one 🙂
Sure enough the blue sky did say good-bye. Fog and clouds moved in and it started to rain. Great! I am only back from my last trek in India in the fog and rain and now that.
And of course it did stop to rain when we reached the hotel and had our first beer.
Our place for the night: The Rappenseehütte. We had a 4 bed room that was super small but ok for one night. Since it was still early we went and opened the red wine together with some bread and cheese. The guys had some sausage on top of that. That afternoon we did fix the wine and together with the food and beer it was more than 5 kg less to carry the next day!
Since the forecast was not tooooo good i opted only for the iPhone and did leave the big Canon back home. That was a try and i am kind of happy but if i really want to take pictures i would not start with the phone camera. As long as the sky is blue and there is enough light it does work quite well.
Did stop somewhere at the side of the road – and the Austrians did put a pair of shoes for me next to the street. Nice – only i have size 15 and i am not really sure about used shoes. Make it a few T-Shirts next time or something! XL but not to wide pls!
We had to get the key from the village and than we drove up next to the last ski lift station. From there it is only a bit more than 100 meters – difference in altitude that is. So up up with the beer and wine, sleeping bag and stuff. Than wood in the oven as the night will be cold. This is the sun – setting over Nauders.
One of the old huts that they put all over the mountains. Did store hay in them in the good old times. Most of them are empty now and the others are locked so i could not find out what they keep in them. Now i can not tell you – SORRY!
There is a bridge over troubled water! Thanks!
Hello Austrian! Take me to your leader!!!
“Follow us!” Weeyyy – Security is tight up here in the Alps!
“I am the boss – what do you want?” In the end we did invite them for tea the next day. We did not really expect them to come anyhow as it is not easy to describe from here to our place.
Not sure if Andreas Hofer would be happy if he knew that they put his face on a pack of cheese.
TNew snow cannon galore. Not sure if this is here because of global warming or to stretch the season…
