Pictures from the Roof of Matt’s Place in Battery Park, New York City
Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan Island is a great place to be in New York City. You have the water and the green park right at your doorstep. Still it is very close to the rest of Lower Manhattan. A few minutes to the mouth-watering restaurants of Chinatown, minutes away from Soho, Tribeca and the bridges to Brooklyn on the other side. From here you take the ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. As well as the free ferry to Staten Island from the South Ferry Terminal!
I was very happy when I found out that my 1st host has a place here. And when I went to the roof the next morning – boy I was sold!!
View up North. There is a Beach Volley Ball court, Mini Golf, skate park and basket ball courts as well as a big lawn where once the docs used to be. A jogging / walking path and a biking path along the water with lots of benches to take a rest and enjoy the view over Hoboken.
On the next dock was a concert which gives an interesting sound track together with the taxi helicopters and the sound of the street.
View towards Brooklyn. You can see 1WTC – the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere with 541 meters (including the antenna)
Yes it is Miss Liberty on the right
Old and new in the warm light of the setting sun
The Empire State Building towering over the other buildings in Midtown Manhattan. If you imagine that it is 443 meters high and was built in 1931 – how long do you think it was the tallest building in New York City?? Yes till the World Trade Center’s North Tower was completed in 1972!! Not to mention that is was the tallest building in the world for a long time as well.
